Turn legal documents into trusted digital records on Canton Network

Abstract Structure

What is Cygnet?

Cygnet is a backend protocol for the Canton Network that anchors off-chain documents on-chain by hashing and stamping them to the ledger. It enables applications to record the existence and integrity of executed documents without exposing their contents or requiring on-chain storage.

These stamped, immutable records become verifiable, time-bound proofs that a specific document exists in a finalized state—serving as trusted inputs to trigger atomic business processes, such as asset settlements, payment flows, or contract obligations within smart workflows.

Beyond execution logic, Cygnet also makes these on-chain document attestations viewable and traceable, enabling regulatory and compliance oversight across jurisdictions—without compromising document privacy.

Features

01

Backend Protocol by Design

Cygnet is built to integrate into existing applications as a backend service—allowing developers to embed document stamping and verification directly into their workflows, without enforcing a specific UI or signing tool.

02

Verifiable On-Chain Anchoring

Records a tamper-proof cryptographic hash (e.g., SHA-256) of a document, with a standard set of metadata, on the Canton ledger—providing a permanent, auditable reference for any off-chain file.

03

Multi-Party Signature Support

Enables applications to associate multiple authorized signers with a single document hash, supporting collaborative validation in regulated or enterprise settings.

04

Flexible Storage Architecture

Keeps data ownership with the application. Cygnet users store documents wherever they choose—cloud, IPFS, enterprise vaults—while leveraging on-chain validation for integrity.

05

Smart Contract-Enabled

Anchored document hashes can be used as trusted inputs to DAML smart contracts, unlocking conditional execution, automated workflows, and settlement triggers. Cygnet removes barriers that previously prevented true atomic transactions, where key documents had to be verified manually off-chain. By making those documents verifiable on-chain, Cygnet enables seamless, trusted execution from end to end.

06

Privacy-First by Default

Only minimal metadata and hashed values are recorded on-chain—ensuring sensitive content remains secure, private, and under the control of the application or enterprise.

07

Legal Document Fidelity

Many financial and legal workflows still require original, full-text documents—rather than tokenized abstractions—to satisfy regulatory, contractual, or compliance obligations. Cygnet bridges this gap by linking real-world documents to on-chain logic in a verifiable and auditable way.
